elegram The format is double-sided, allowing the reader to approach the book from either direction. This reflects the idea of parallel, disconnected experiences shaped by gender. As the narrative progresses, the two colour systems begin to intersect, gradually disrupting the grid. By the centre of the book, both voices are equally present, symbolising a shift towards balance and equality.
The visual system is built around two colours — blue and pink — used as a deliberately simple and ironic reference to gender coding. The book is structured in two parts: one addressing stereotypes around boys, the other around girls.
This book explores gender stereotypes in child rearing, drawing on Sean Berne’s research in gender psychology. Its title refers to a children’s game — "The Floor is Lava" — and plays on a linguistic overlap in Russian, where the same word is used for both "floor" and "gender." This dual meaning becomes the conceptual foundation of the project.
